Oviedo!

Thought I'd give a little info on (and numerous pictures of!) my new town of Oviedo!

First of all, Oviedo itself is found in the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain, and--indeed--is the region's Capital City!!! Population's approximately 221,000, and it's said to have been founded by two monks (Máximo and Fromestanus if you're interested!!! :p) in the year 761, although it's been proven that Romans had a foothold here too, so its origins are older that that!

It was established as Asturias's Capital City by King Alphonso II ('the Chaste') in the the 9th Century, and it's to him that Oviedo also owes its principal site: the Cathedral of San Salvador!

The Cathedral of Oviedo, taking in features of Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, as well as housing Alphonso II's Cámara Santa, and the Panteón Real, burial place of the early Kings of Asturias and--later--León:

Oviedo itself is a really pretty little place--with lots going on--and other sites include a lovely town hall on Plaza de la Constitución, the Campo San Francisco park, and lots of random little statues placed throughout the city! :)

The Cathedral by night with La Regenta in front.
